Immolation has always been a force to be reckoned with. As one of death metal’s most established acts, they have reigned over the genre like a black cloud for decades. New album Atonement once again helps to reestablish and reaffirm their place amongst the kings of the realm.
Make no mistake about it this is not a pleasant record. This is quite possibly one of the best death metal releases I’ve heard in a long time. It’s brutal without being vulgar or grisly, but also has melody when required. It proves that with deathcore coming and going, that sometimes the oldies are still the best.
There’s always a temptation with death metal to go epic, but I feel the quicker tempo helps the songs here. The razor sharp riffs and blood shaking drums come thick and fast, but still, allow you to soak in every note. Atonement will leave you breathless and dizzy.
Immolation is a band that has weathered the storms. It’s a testament to them they continue to strive to be this good. Never once pandering to trends or trying to do something wildly outside of what brought them to the dance. It has paid off for them as they can still create something unique to both themselves and the genre they inhabit. Even if you have a passing interest in death metal and have yet to really explore it then this is a great entry point. Atonement is an instant.
